Blue Reef Aquarium is joining forces with Cornwall College Newquay to present ‘Invention and Discovery’ – a week of marine-themed education and entertainment taking place between March 15th – 22nd.
Organised in association with National Science and Engineering Week, the week-long event is the brainchild of a group of wildlife students from the college.
The students will present their own array of activities, installations and exhibitions designed to give younger visitors the chance to explore the fascinating secrets of marine life.
John Dietz, Wildlife Education and Media Foundation Degree student, said: “Each year National Science and Engineering Week aims to highlight how the sciences, technology, engineering and maths relate to our everyday lives.
“It crucially helps to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers with fun, interactive events and activities throughout different organisations across the UK. The theme for this year’s event at Blue Reef Aquarium is Invention and Discovery,” he added.
There will be match the marine life pairs game, colouring and drawing activities, demonstrations on how the shape of fish can help them swim faster, a look at what is happening beneath fish scales, how fish can breathe underwater and what helps them survive.
Blue Reef’s Steve Matchett said: “We work closely with the college throughout the year and this annual event is a perfect opportunity to showcase the work that the students do and, hopefully inspire more youngsters to get involved with the sciences.
“It’s a great way to share knowledge because the students are able to communicate key scientific principles in a fun and entertaining way.”
