Visitors to Newquay’s Blue Reef Aquarium will be able to immerse themselves in the world of sharks over the May Half Term Holidays (May 28th – June 5th)
Using a mixture of exhibitions, entertaining talks, feeding demonstrations and fun activities, Shark Week aims to dispel many of the popular misconceptions of sharks as mindless man-eaters by showing the facts behind the fiction.
Younger visitors will be able to go on a shark and ray hunt around the aquarium with 10 hidden sharks and rays to be tracked down. Everyone who successfully completes the trail will be entered in to a draw to win one of three cuddly blacktip reef sharks.
Shark Workshops will be taking place every afternoon with fascinating facts and hands-on activities helping to bring the mysterious world of the oceans’ ultimate predators to life.
There’s also the chance to win a giant cuddly shark as part of a shark quiz with questions and information boards dotted around the aquarium.
Plus there will be shark-themed colouring sheets provided on an activity table in the Blue Reef Café.
In addition to all the extra activities visitors will also be able to come face to face with a dozen different species of sharks and rays; ranging from native dogfish and bull huss to black tip reef sharks and stingrays.
Sharks first appeared in our seas 350 million years ago – that’s 100 million years before the dinosaurs. Today there are over 350 different species from the 18cm spined pygmy shark to the 18-metre whale shark.
British waters are visited by around 30 different species – including the world’s second largest, the basking shark, which can grow to 12 metres.
