Deep Cleaning Tanks

This week we have been focusing on deep cleaning our larger tanks here at the aquarium. To do this we have a mechanical pump siphon to really get into the substrate, leaving it clean and looking great ready for our visitors.

The first tank was our native bass and bream tank: Displays Supervisor Lara got into the tank to get all those hard to reach places. The siphon churns up the sand and the pump, pumps all the dirty water out and down the drain.

Next, we moved onto our wave tank which is home to native grey mullet, wrasse and small spotted catsharks. This tank we had to do in stages.

Firstly we removed all the fish into a temporary tank in quarantine and then drained the tank completely. When the tank was Empty Lara started to remove and clean rocks and then place them back in to create ‘hides’.

Now that the rocks have been cleaned and re-themed it was time to refill the tank and give it a pump siphon just like the previous tank.

As the tank is now clean, re-themed and re-filled again we released the all the fish back into their home.
