DEEP SEA DISCOVERY WEEK AT BLUE REEF AQUARIUM

Newquay’s Blue Reef Aquarium will be embarking on a mission of deep sea discovery as part of British Science Week (March 13th – 22nd).
British Science Week (BSW) is a 10-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths – featuring fascinating, entertaining and engaging events and activities across the UK for people of all ages.

BSW provides a platform to stimulate and support teachers, Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths professionals, science communicators and the general public to produce and participate in STEM events and activities.

Organised and run by Wildlife Education and Media students with assistance from Animal Behaviour and Psychology students from Cornwall College (Newquay), ‘Deep Sea Discovery’ will provide a fun, interactive introduction to the wonders of the marine world for youngsters.
“Younger visitors will be able to discover what it takes to become a deep-sea voyager, whilst learning all about the mysteries of marine life; their adaptations and strategies for survival, interactions between species, and how humans have benefited from these incredible creatures,” said co-organiser Rhiann Mitchell-Holland.
“In addition we will aim to raise awareness, stimulate the senses through interactive activities and exhibitions, encourage positive behaviour change through effective interpretation of environmental education and enhance the overall visitor experience,” she added.
On arrival youngsters will be issued with a ‘Deep Sea Discovery Mission Passport’ and set a series of missions which they need to accomplish.
Mission events and activities will include everything from face-painting and jellyfish-making craft sessions to story-telling, touch-boxes and even a simulated submarine bridge.
Other topics covered during the event feature the food chain and marine predator and prey strategies.
The ‘deep-sea’ themed adventure will also continue throughout the aquarium with different areas representing different depths of the sea.
Upon completion, participants will be awarded with a signed certificate and become official ‘Deep Sea Discoverers’.
