The Bull Huss Shark (Scyliorhinus stellaris) is also known as a Nursehound and is a member of the cat shark family. It is commonly found off UK coastlines, favouring rocky crevices they can use to hide in during the day while they sleep. Bull Huss Sharks are nocturnal hunters and will scour the sea floor looking for crabs, worms, small bony fish such as mackerel and even smaller sharks! These sharks have powerful jaws used to crush open the shells of hard-bodied prey such as crabs.
The crevices which these sharks like to hide in are often used by multiple sharks at once, so during the day you will often find sharks cuddled up with each other on the sea floor. A group of sharks such as these is called a ‘shiver of sharks’, named so possibly because sharks are cold blooded, but also maybe because seeing a group of sharks together could be quite scary for a diver!
